Job Description

The IT System Administrator performs activities and functions at a professional level for the agency working with a team of IT professionals. Responsible for providing support for the operation of computer and telecommunications systems, all operating systems, hardware configurations and network connections. Provides technical IT expertise for focused work groups on a regular basis, dealing with both management and other technical employees to solve major problems. Perform assignments independently and provide training and instruction to end users and other IT staff. Work is performed under the supervision of the IT Director.  Other duties include but are not limited to the installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of LAN/WAN, wired and wireless networks, server systems (hardware, software, operating systems), and telecommunications networks (telephony and video).




Examples of Work


  • Serves as the technical expert responsible for the completion of multiple projects.

  • Reports to management regarding the status of projects.

  • Responsible for collaborating with management to develop optimal solutions to major computing or telecommunications problems and designs technical solutions.

  • Responsible for the monitoring, analysis, design, implementation, and administration of the hardware and software of a large Local Area Network (LAN), multiple LANs, and a Wide Area Network (WAN), including servers, peripherals, network nodes, terminals, wiring, and wireless implementations.

  • Communicates and coordinates network schedule, backups, and downtime to users.

  • Prepares and maintains documentation of network configurations and cabling layouts.

  • May administer security activities.

  • May provide support and software/database modification for specialized/custom business-centric applications, including Electronic Health/Medical Record system (HER/EMR).

  • May provide user training on voice or data systems.

  • Installs, configures, maintains, and troubleshoots a wide range of software used throughout the agency on a Windows-based network.

  • Work with vendors and support end users via HelpDesk Ticket system, Remote/Phone Support, and Deskside Computer Support

  • Performs hardware/software upgrades to existing computer equipment as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the agency.

 Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in computer science AND two (2) years or more of experience installing, configuring, and supporting computer networks.




Associate's degree in computer science or college level coursework that includes 15 computer science credits AND four (4) years or more of experience installing, configuring, and supporting computer networks.




Six (6) years or more of experience installing, configuring, and supporting computer networks or supporting staff in the operation, maintenance and installation of computer systems.




Job Requirements


Knowledge and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of Windows Server and Cisco Networking and Telecommunication networks required

  • Knowledge of PowerShell and VBA scripting preferable

  • Group Policy Object Management, and Active Directory Administration

  • Requires technical knowledge to provide support for computers, network, and applications

  • Knowledge of computer imaging, software deployment, and virtual desktop techniques preferred

  • Requires strong analytical skills for troubleshooting and system/network design

  • MSCE or CCNA certification a plus


  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects amid shifting priorities and tight deadlines

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Requires the ability to independently perform all of the duties of the position efficiently and effectively.

  • Must have strong communication and training skills and be able to communicate technical information to non-technical users, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

    Physical Skills and Abilities

    Depending on the assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 - 50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed in a standard office setting and there is considerable interaction with users and other team members requiring tact and diplomacy to balance competing views. Some travel may be required for which private means of transportation should be available. Work outside of regular work schedule may be anticipated.

    Valid license and safe, reliable, insured vehicle required.
